Control Blood Sugar Levels and You Help Control Diabetes

By June Carr

Controlling your blood sugar is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy if you have diabetes. A person of normal health without diabetes has blood sugar levels that remain within narrow limits, all done completely naturally with the body's natural generation of insulin. When a person has diabetes either Type 1 or Type 2, blood sugar levels can potentially rise or fall outside of safe levels and potentially result in severe health problems that could affect your longevity.

These potential health problems could manifest themselves as kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, eye disease, hypertension, nerve disease and an assortment of other less debilitating, but equally annoying problems.

While it is always wise to consult your doctor or health care professional if you have concerns about controlling blood sugar levels, here are a few suggestions till you schedule that appointment.

Eat Your Food Slowly

Many of us live with stress and frenzy as part of our everyday lives, but instead of reacting to elevated blood sugar levels, be proactive and slow down, especially when you eat. When you chew slowly several things happen, one we taste our food more thoroughly and as a result tend not to overeat. Common sense tells us if we don't overeat, we'll have a much easier time keeping our weight in check, and with that controlling blood sugar levels is a much easier task.

Count To Ten (Minutes)

Many do not realize it takes approximately 20 minutes for our brains to recognize the fact that our stomachs are full, thus making it easy to reach for that second helping and become stuffed. Next time you're at the dinner table, wait ten minutes before reaching for that second helping. When you do that, often you'll find you won't need that second helping, which leads us to the next suggestion.

Eat Often

While that mean seem contradictory to what's written above, it's actually sound advice. If we wait till we're starving (figuratively), we'll tend to eat more than necessary. If instead we'll have smaller healthier meals throughout the day, our blood sugar levels will remain more constant and we won't suffer hunger pangs.

While the above paragraph may simply seem like a good way to lose weight, it's actually designed to help you control your blood sugar level, since someone who is diabetic, cannot process the extra sugar easily.

Smaller meals more frequently throughout the day equal less elevated blood sugar.

If you'll take the time to learn to eat properly, then controlling your blood sugar, and that's helping to overcome the onset or severity of diabetes can help you live in a normal and healthy lifespan.

In the short term controlling blood sugar levels will help you feel better, remain healthy, have more overall energy, and prevent some of the symptoms associated with diabetes and high blood sugar. You'll find that you won't suffer many of the symptoms such as being continually thirsty feeling run down, having to go to the bathroom more often as necessary, losing weight unnaturally, finding your vision blurred, all symptoms related to diabetes and high blood sugar levels.

In the long term, while medical science can certainly help us overcome the symptoms of diabetes, having the desire and discipline to control blood sugar levels will allow you to enjoy a longer and better quality of life.
