Diet tips for Diabetics

The diabetic diet has a profound effect on helping the body, specifically the pancreas, manage the sugar levels in the blood stream. Controlling blood sugar levels can be achieved through a multitude of methods within the diet, all working together to maintain a balanced blood sugar level and insuring balanced health. Blood sugar levels are affected by what is eaten, when it is eaten, in addition to how much is eaten.  Let’s look at foods for diabetics.

Choosing whole foods can help those with diabetes, or at risk of getting diabetes, to control their blood sugar levels.  Whole, plant based foods will help control the disease itself.  Foods containing high amounts of refined sugars can cause sugar levels in the blood to have huge spikes. It is best to steer clear of refined foods containing large amounts of simple sugars. White rice, candy, soda and juice all represent examples of foods containing high levels of refined, simple sugars.  Any highly processed food is best to be avoided.

Non-starchy vegetables are great choices for diabetics to eat in addition to whole grains, beans, lean meats and non-fat dairy products. Planning meals is an important aspect of insuring that foods consumed are thought out when it comes to their affect on health. When left to chance or to the last minute, it may be tempting to grab something less than healthy in the rush to eat.  A little planning ahead will ensure wholesome foods are readily available.  The diabetics meals will be better managed with advance planning.

In addition to choosing whole foods that are low in simple sugars, diabetics may find it important to monitor cholesterol and fat intake. Because of increased risk for heart disease among diabetics, it is important to limit foods that are fatty and full of cholesterol. Instead, opt for lean meats like chicken and healthy oils, like olive oil and canola oil.  Choose avocados, nuts and fish instead of eggs, red meats and dairy, which has high levels of cholesterol.

While making wise diet choices in regard to choosing whole foods, diabetics can also gain control over blood sugar levels by monitoring when foods and drinks are consumed.

Making sure snacks and meals are not skipped is an important part of maintaining controlled blood sugar levels by insuring levels are maintained within the normal ranges. Regular meals and snack times are important in maintaining consistency.
